I have not read all of David Baldacci’s books, but of the 15 or so I have read, this is by far the best.It’s not a murder or spy mystery. In fact, it’s not a mystery at all, but it nonetheless draws you in and holds you there as fully as any of his thrillers. It is the story of Lou and her younger bother Oz, two children thrown by circumstance into Appalachian life during the Depression, a change no less foreign for them than had they found themselves in China. Baldacci captures the ethos of the time and place splendidly, with rich characters you wrap yourself around.I read it in two sittings, and when it ended I wished for it to go on. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I know what I will be giving away on my next round of birthday gifts. As I age I have less tolerance for novels that are designed to manipulate my emotions. This is a perfectly fine story fairly well told; however, there are too many coincidental occurrences and IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS! for my taste. Basically this is a melodrama disguised as literature. I'm sure that anyone who reads this review will be puzzled as to was I'd give it three stars since I had negative things to say. Although I knew I was being tricked into it, I enjoyed the characters and the description of time and place was very well written.
